About us

Welcome to Illinois Cardiac Surgery, where we are dedicated to our patients and their cardiac needs. Our commitment is rooted in providing you with the latest technology from exceptional surgeons and staff. ICS surgeons perform a wide range of procedures, including minimally invasive surgeries, valve repairs, and open-heart surgeries. We also specialize in pediatric cardiac surgery for our littlest patients, as well as the use of innovative robotics, the newest revolution in leading edge surgery.

Founded in 1979, Illinois Cardiac Surgery was formed to provide excellence in cardiac surgery to patients from all walks of life, from all areas of the world. ICS is proud to offer the most advanced medical care within the friendly confines of a small town, Peoria, Illinois. Committed to treating you, the highly trained team at ICS has made your heart their mission.

Milestones

  1979
State-of-the-art adult cardiac surgery is established at OSF Saint Francis Hospital by Dr. Robert Gomez, now retired. He founds the group that becomes Illinois Cardiac Surgery Associates.
1980
Dale Geiss, MD, joins practice to perform adult cardiac surgery and establish a pediatric cardiac surgery program. All congenital heart defects are treated, using the most advanced techniques. The program becomes the largest in the state outside of Chicago.
  1981
Illinois Cardiac expands to provide services at Methodist Medical Center.
1987
The surgeons complete their
first heart transplant, starting a nationally recognized program that treats
over 600 patients annually.

  1989
An important advance takes place in the treatment of mitral valve insufficiency as surgeons repair (rather than replace) the valve, eliminating the need for lifelong blood thinners.
1990
Surgical treatment of complex electrical problems of the heart begins
in Peoria, Illinois.

  1991
Illinois Cardiac expands to provide service at Proctor Hospital, Peoria, Illinois.
1999
Peoria is recognized as the best cardiac transplant center in Illinois and among the top twenty in the nation.
  2000
Our transplant program's extraordinary results in using a mechanical heart to support patients recovering from high-risk surgery are published and receive national recognition.
2003
Randall S. Fortuna, MD, joins the practice. Dr. Fortuna is skilled in the management of both pediatric and adult cardiac surgical cases and has experience in performing a broad range of complex surgical procedures.
  2003
The pediatric heart surgery program at The Children's Hospital of Illinois at OSF Saint Francis is designated as a premier facility in treating congenital heart disease, only one of seven across the nation.
2004
Drs. Geiss and Fortuna become the only cardiac surgeons in central Illinois who perform robotic-assisted mitral valve repair on adults, children and infants. The procedure allows the surgeons to make tinier cuts with more precision. Patients benefit from less blood loss, less pain and shorter recovery times.
